Derby is located close to the Buccaneer Archipelago - a coastal area with
thousands of small uninhabited islands. Exploring this area and further a-field
along the Kimberley coast in sea safari style is a unique holiday experience. On
a cruise you use a vessel to travel between the islands and camp out in swags
and mosquito domes on sandy beaches. Fishing, bird watching, bush walking,
exploring gorges, a visit to a pearl farm, mud crabbing, collecting oysters from
the rocks and enjoying great companionship under the tropical stars can all be a
part of a very special holiday.
The cruise operators based in Derby have tours that range from 3 days up to
14 days and operate from approximately April to October.
Groups tend to be kept small ranging from 4 to 12 passengers depending on demand
and length of tour. Charters are also available for special interest group
bookings. Operators will build a tour to your requirements.
Some tours make use of a seaplane and include a scenic flight from Broome or
Derby (and vice versa from the boat to Broome or Derby), over the Buccaneer
Archipelago to the Talbot Bay area where you meet up with your cruise operator.
Tour prices average from $360 per person per day upwards (with a full compliment
of passengers). Minimum numbers apply.
Sights To See And Things To Do On Your Cruise
The Derby Visitor Centre can assist with recommending an operator to take
you on a cruise that will include many or some of the following activities and
special places.
Visit Cone Bay with waterfalls cascading into the sea and pockets of tropical
rainforest supporting unusual bird life. Hells Gate, tidal torrents, the power
of the tides at the Talbot Bay Horizontal Waterfalls. Cruise into Walcott Inlet
and Doubtful Bay and the mouths of rivers such as the Sale, Charnley, Isdell,
Hunter and Prince Regent with the famous Kings Cascades. Island hopping can
include Aboriginal rock painting galleries, whale/dolphin and turtle watching,
beach combing, hiking though deep gorges, swimming in fresh water lagoons below
cascading waterfalls, or snorkelling in coral lagoons at low tide. Lie on the
beach, catch some fish and mud crabs, pick fresh oysters off the rocks, go
crocodile spotting, bird watch and photograph to your hearts content. Camp in
comfortable swags on the beach around a camp fire, listen to the sounds of the
bush and sea at night and be bathed in brilliant starlight.
